Design properties

Every style setting in the Design panel: where it appears, the levels you can set it at, its options or unit, and the value it starts with.

This page lists every setting in the Design panel, the right-hand panel of the Composition tab. Each table shows a setting’s label as it appears in the app, the levels where you can change it, its options or unit, and its default.

How the levels work

Every style is set at one of five levels. You pick the level by selecting something in the Composition panel or in the preview:

LevelWhat you selectWhat it affects
GlobalThe Credits movie row at the top of the Composition panel (the Design panel calls it Global defaults)Every scene, block, line and name
SceneA sceneEverything in that scene
BlockA blockEvery line in that block
LineOne credit line in a block (the panel header says ITEM)That line and its names, in this block only
NameOne name under a line (the panel header says SUBITEM)That name, in this block only

A lower level overrides a higher one. A setting you don’t change at a level is inherited from the level above, and the panel shows where it comes from, for example from Global. To change it at the level you’re on, tick the checkbox at the left of the setting: it takes the inherited value as a starting point and you can edit it. Untick it to inherit again. When lines or blocks below have their own value, the setting shows how many and a Clear link that removes those overrides. The full explanation is in Inherit and override.

Line and Name settings are stored per placement: if the same credit line appears in two blocks, each placement keeps its own style.

At Global and Scene level the panel shows every section, grouped under Cast, Crew, Music, Text and Image, so you can style each block type once (see Global styles and fonts). At Block, Line and Name level it only shows the sections for that block’s type. The search box at the top, Search properties…, filters the settings by label.

Units: vw is a percentage of the frame width (1.6 vw is 1.6% of the width), so sizes stay the same relative to the picture at any resolution. em is relative to the text’s own font size. % is a percentage of the space the block or image sits in.

Scene

The section is called All scenes at Global level and This scene on a scene. Timing is explained in Cards, scrolls and timing.

SettingLevelsOptions or unitDefaultNotes

Entries

How each credit line is laid out. The sections are Cast entries, Crew entries, Songs and Text entries (This cast entry, This song and so on when a line is selected). Image blocks have their own section, below.

Name lists

How the names under a line are laid out. The sections are Actors list (cast), People list (crew) and Song-credit list (music). Text and image blocks don’t have one.

Text styles

Each block type has one style for the line’s label and, except text blocks, one for its names:

Block typeLabel styleName style
CastCharacter styleActor style
CrewRole stylePerson style
MusicSong styleSong credit style
TextText style
ImageCaption style

All of them have the same settings:

The Images section (This image when one is selected) sizes and treats each logo or picture in an image block. See Logos and images.

SettingLevelsOptions or unitDefaultNotes

GrayscaleGlobal, Scene, Block, Lineon / offoffCan be combined with Invert colors.

For image blocks, the Line level is one image and the Name level is one caption line. The image also has the Item margin top and Item margin bottom settings listed under Entries.

Inline marker style

Text you put between double brackets in a name, like [[as]], is an inline marker: it gets its own style, so a small “as” or “and” can sit between bigger names. The section appears at every level.
